Concrete Surface Preparation

Preparation of New & Existing Concrete Courts
Preparation of a concrete sport surface requires two additional steps not required with asphalt courts.

New Concrete Courts
A new concrete court must cure for 28 days and then be acid etched. Phosphoric Acid is one of the suitable acids. Ask your retailer (Home Depot, Lowes, Ace Hardware etc.) for recommendations if Phosphoric Acid is not available.

Cautions:
  • Read the acid container label before using. Follow acid manufacturer's dilution and safety instructions. If the instructions are not clear, contact the acid manufacturer before proceeding.
  • PROTECTIVE CLOTHING & SAFETY EQUIPMENT
Wear safety goggles and rubber gloves. Always wear long pants and a long sleeve shirt when working with acid. Wear something old.
  • ACID ETCHING INDOORS
If acid etching indoors, use with adequate ventilation during application and drying.
  • Close containers when not in use
ACID ETCHING PROCESS
  1.  Follow dilution directions on acid container.
  2. When applying diluted acid to surface, always begin on the high side of the surface slope. Beginning at the top of the slope, using a nylon or polypropylene brush or broom, apply diluted mixture over as large an area that can be covered in a fifteen minute period. Allow to sit for 5 minutes or ontil foaming ceases. Starting at the beginning point, thoroughly rinse the etched area with water.
  3.  Repeat process until entire surface has been etched. A standard tennis court with dimensions of 60' x 120' will likely take 2-3 hours to acid etch.
DO NOT ALLOW ACID TO DRY ON SURFACE!.

Acrylic Adhesion Promoter
After acid etching, it is necessary to apply a coat of "MultiAcrylic Adhesion Promoter" (a primer for the concrete which promotes better adhesion of repair products and coating applications). MultiAcrylic Adhesion Promoter is a 100% acrylic emulsion and can be applied by spray, roller or brush. MultiAcrylic Adhesion Promoter is ready to use. Requires no dilution. When the acid etching and the Acrylic Adhesion Promoter have been applied, you will now follow the same instructions for treating asphalt courts.

Note: It is recommended not to apply MultiAcrylic Adhesion Promoter until you are ready to apply MultiCover Acrylic Resurfacer with Sand (base-coat) as soon as possible afer the Adhesion Promoter is dry. The adhesion promoter is to be dry when touched by hand.

Existing Concrete Courts Which Have Been Previously Color Coated Or Older Concrete Courts Which Have Never Been Coated

Existing or older courts must be thoroughly power washed prior to commencing repairs or coating applications. Power washer should have a fan or rotary style nozzle and pressure of 2000-2200 psi (lbs. per sq. inch).

If the concrete surface has been exposed in peeled areas, it is stronly recommended to apply a coat of acrylic adhesion promoter prior to commencing leveling of the peeled areas or coating applications. Once the acid etching, and leveling of peeled areas (if necessary) has ben completed, follow instructions for repairing and coating asphalt courts.
