DIY Overview

Determining the condition of your asphalt or concrete tennis or basketball court or other sport surface is very important. You don't want to waste money purchasing unnecessary materials. On the other hand, you don't want to put money and time into refurbishing your surface and not be aware that for very little more money and effort, you could improve player comfort and court playability.

The following three steps should be followed to make a knowledgeable decision as to what repairs are recommended before the coating applications begin.

  1. Are there cracks in the surface? If so, are the cracks wide enough and deep enough to force crack filler into? If the answer is yes, the cracks should be treated. See Treating Cracks.

  2. Are there depressions in the surface?
Depressions (puddles/birdbaths) are areas of the surface that hold water long after a rainfall, and the rest of the court has dried. The depressions are usually easy to spot. They show as dirty areas on the surface. The puddles not only hold water, but also hold dirt within the puddles, which eventually clings to the court surface after the puddles have dried.

If the depressions are within the normal area of play you should consider leveling them. If the depressions are not within the area of play, you may wish to ignore them. The "rule of thumb" that will help you to decide is simple. Allow the court to thoroughly dry after a rainfall (or use a sprinkler to flood the surface) and then place a 5-cent coin in the deepest part of the puddle. If the water covers the coin, you should seriously consider leveling the depression. See Leveling Depressions.

You have a tennis court, not a pool table. The perfect tennis court has never been built. (and never will). A water remover, usually kept hanging on the court fence, will remove minor puddles quickly and effectively.

  3. Has the surface been color coated previously? Is the surface peeling? Is the surface dirty, rough or porous? It is always recommended to power wash the entire surface including flushing out all cracks prior to commencing any repairs or coating applications.

    Power Washing
A power washer should have a pressure ranging from 2000 - 2200 psi (lbs. per square inch) and a fan style or rotary nozzle.

Power washing will solve several problems at the same time

    1. Thoroughly clean the surface and surface pores allowing an excellent bond for the new coating materials.
    2. Remove loose materials and mildew that may or may not be visible.
    3. Flush-out dirt or vegetation growing in the cracks, allowing a good bond for the crack fillers.
Now that you have determined what repairs (if any) are necessary, you now have three choices that will determine the appearance and comfort level of your new surface.
  1. Will you be applying a one color application or two color application?
  2. Will you use MultiMate Color with Sand (requiring the addition of 45-50% clean water) or MultiMate Ready-Mix Color with Sand & Water?
  3. Will there be players over the age of 40 using the court? If so, you should consider applying a cushioned surface. If this is a consideration please review Is a Cushioned Surface a Good Investment?.

MultiMate Color with Sand will reduce the overall cost of the project by approximately $0.06 per sq.ft.; however, it is more time consuming because it requires on-site batching of the 5-gallon pails in a drum and the addition of clean water.

MultiMate Ready-Mix Color (with sand & water added) is a truly "ready-to-use" product. Just stir each pail, pour, and apply with a soft rubber squeegee. The additional cost of this easy to use product is due to the addition of water at our manufacturing facility, which increases the number of pails required by 50% and additional shipping costs.

"I am a financial and administrative person with a great love for construction projects and an old love for tennis. Building my own tennis court was just another of my lifetime dreams, but with most dreams an angel is always a welcome partner. Not all angels have wings - well maybe Allan Gardner has wings.

If Allan doesn't have wings then it's just one little thing he is missing because when you talk tennis, Allan had all the knowledge, expertise and supplies necessary for me to build my dream court.

My dream started with a search to understand the technical and financial elements to build a tennis court. I knew I wanted a Har-Tru surface. A local contractor scared me enough into my decision to be my own contractor when he gave me a proposal for $ 35,000.00 just for a stone wall around the court.

When I located Tennis Universal, I was calling them at unnatural hours, and even on weekends, almost always getting a real person and not a machine. After a few times I said to the person answering the phone, you must be the owner because no one but an owner works these hours. That's when Allan and I became friends in the summer of 2003.

I call Allan Gardner a friend, although I have never met him other then on the phone. A good friend is a person who is always there for you and is always ready to help. That's Allan!

Tennis Universal is a business but Allan runs it like a devoted father taking care of and educating his children. I came in a little late for the computer world so I'm still calling and talking to people. Allan always has the time to talk, educate and explain, even though almost everything I needed to know is on Tennis Universal's web site. Next week I will install the lines on my Har-Tru dream court, set the net posts and tennis net, and try out my new racquet, a gift from my son for my 58th birthday.

If you are lucky enough to have or want a tennis court, look for my angel. He's available for all that want to have a great tennis experience. Many thanks Allan."
